If you have ever come across a brightly coloured, slightly thickish rubber band-like bracelet adorning someone's wrist then you have been introduced to the latest fashionable and socially acceptable form of telling the world who you are and just what you think. These rubber band bracelets, also known as silicone bracelets, are one of the most popular methods adopted by just about everyone these days to promote a worthy cause, or to give words of hope, healing, wisdom, and encouragement.
These bracelets have been used to bridge everything from racism (a popular trend in the U.K. is to wear both a black and a white band together denoting that the wearer is against racism); to promoting cancer awareness (two well known examples would be the bright yellow of the Lance Armstrong cancer awareness LiveStrong bracelet and the pretty pink Breast cancer awareness bracelet).
And it is not only the colour of these rubber band bracelets which helps to identify them and promote a cause. It is also the messages which are embossed, debossed, screen printed or colour-filled on these bracelets that helps to support these causes. As a method of creating awareness among people these bracelets are right at the top of just about everybody's list.
The two things that make rubber band bracelets so popular for these events (and not just for charitable and fund raising events either, but for sporting events, concerts, company events, school events etc.), lays in the fact that they are inexpensive, making them affordable for just about everyone; and also in the fact that they are age- and gender-neutral. You are not committing a fashion faux-pas when you wear one of these bracelets - no matter what age you are, no matter whether you are male, or female.
There is also no limit on the number of bracelets that can be worn, and there is nothing anywhere which says you must only wear rubber band bracelets which denotes something, or which gives across a message of some sort. Bracelets worn just for the sake of wearing them, for their colours, their designs or their diverse messages, are also acceptable. No one is going to denounce a person for wearing these bracelets just because they want to.
However, it is generally the case that at least one or more of the bracelets worn by people are worn because they mean something to the wearer. It can simply be in aid of a cause they are supporting; an event they went to and have fond memories of; a way for a person to create a unique identity for themselves; or it might even be something more personal such as a personal goal achieved in the face of great difficulty.
Whatever the reason a person has to wear these rubber band bracelets however, one thing is certain: it is not the bracelet that helps to bring people together - it is the wearer. Without the strength and the determination to show the world what you are made of, to show the world just who you are, what you support and where your heart is, these bracelets would simply be rubber bands with no meaning to them whatsoever.
